Coffee branding and packaging design: red pill or blue pill?

By Alkeme Design, brand design studio

Coffee branding is the work of turning beans into a brand people choose on purpose: a name, a visual identity, packaging and a voice that tell one story. Packaging is where that story meets the hand, so the two should be designed together.

This guide walks through the main decisions using COFENEO, a specialty coffee brand concept designed by Alkeme Design around the red pill and the blue pill.

1. Start with the choice you want people to make

Most coffee shelves offer many similar bags. A brand stands out when it gives people a clear choice instead of more options. COFENEO reduces the range to two espressos and makes the choice the whole experience: red or blue.

2. Name the idea, not the product

Good coffee brand names carry an idea that the product can grow into. COFENEO joins coffee and Neo, so the name already points at the story. Before you fall in love with a name, check three things: can people say it, can they spell it after hearing it once, and is the domain available.

3. Use color as a system, not decoration

At COFENEO color is information: red always means the espresso roast from Doi Chaang, blue always means the espresso blend from Akha Ama. The same two colors run through the pouches, the buttons, the receipts and the website. When color carries meaning, customers learn the brand faster.

4. Let the package shape tell the story

The COFENEO pouch is shaped like a capsule pill, vacuum-sealed with a flat border, in solid red or solid blue. The logo and the line specialty coffee 250 g sit on the face of the pill. Even without reading, the shape says pill, and the color says which one.

5. Make the website the first taste

Most people meet a coffee brand online before they taste it. COFENEO's website is an interactive scroll journey that ends in the same choice as the packaging, so the digital experience and the physical product tell one story. Interactive brand websites work best when every effect serves the concept.

How to start a coffee brand: a short checklist

  1. Choose the origin and roast you can stand behind.
  2. Write the one-sentence concept.
  3. Name it and secure the domain.
  4. Design the identity and the packaging as one system.
  5. Build the website as part of the brand, not after it.
  6. Launch with a small, clear range and grow from the idea.
