Concept coffee shop, coffee concept and the red pill: COFENEO FAQ

Short, plain answers about concept coffee shops, concept coffee stores and the COFENEO brand concept, designed by Alkeme Design.

What is a concept coffee shop?

A concept coffee shop is a café built around one clear idea that shapes everything a guest sees, tastes and does: the name, the space, the menu, the packaging and the website. The coffee is still the product, but the concept is the reason people remember it and tell others about it. COFENEO is an example: one idea, choice, drives the whole brand.

What is a concept coffee store?

A concept coffee store sells coffee as a curated experience rather than a shelf of products. It edits the range down to a few deliberate choices and tells a story around them, much like a concept store does for fashion or design. COFENEO reduces the range to two coffees, a red pill and a blue pill, so the choice itself becomes the experience.

What is a coffee concept?

A coffee concept is the central idea behind a coffee brand or café: who it is for, what it believes, and how that belief shows up in name, identity, packaging, space and digital experience. A strong coffee concept can be said in one sentence. COFENEO's is: specialty coffee, two origins, one choice.

What is a concept café?

A concept café is a café designed around a theme, a ritual or a point of view instead of only a menu. The best concept cafés stay subtle: the idea guides decisions without turning the place into a costume. The same rule applies online, where the website can carry the concept before anyone visits.

What is a concept store?

A concept store is a shop that curates products around a lifestyle or an idea, so the selection and the experience matter as much as the items. The term started in fashion and design retail and now applies to coffee, beauty and food. The common thread is editing: fewer products, a clearer story.

What are some coffee shop concept ideas?

Good coffee shop concepts usually come from one sharp idea: a single origin explored in depth, a ritual (slow pour-over, standing espresso), a reference from culture, or a choice the customer makes. COFENEO uses a reference from film, the choice between a red pill and a blue pill, and turns it into two espressos, two pouches and an interactive website.

What is COFENEO?

COFENEO is a specialty coffee brand concept inspired by The Matrix, designed by the brand design studio Alkeme Design. The name joins coffee and Neo. The concept offers two espressos from Thailand, presented as a red pill and a blue pill, packed in pill-shaped pouches and introduced through an interactive scroll website.

Is COFENEO a real coffee brand?

COFENEO is a brand and website concept created by Alkeme Design to show how a coffee brand can be built around one idea. The coffees it presents are real specialty origins from northern Thailand: Doi Chaang for the red espresso roast and Akha Ama for the blue espresso blend.

Who designed COFENEO?

COFENEO was designed by Alkeme Design, a brand design studio led by its founder, Ovidiu Tarbuc. The studio created the name, the visual identity, the pill-shaped packaging and the interactive website. Alkeme Design works on coffee brands, packaging and brand systems.

What does red pill or blue pill mean?

In The Matrix (1999), the red pill stands for an uncomfortable truth and the blue pill for a comfortable illusion. The phrase is now used for any choice between seeing things as they are and staying as you were. At COFENEO it becomes a coffee choice: the red pill is a bright espresso roast, the blue pill a rounder espresso blend.

What does there is no spoon mean?

In The Matrix, there is no spoon means the limit is in the mind, not in the object: once you stop treating a rule as fixed, you can bend it. COFENEO uses the idea literally: a spoon bends on scroll, and the line becomes do not try to stir the coffee, only coffee.

What does follow the white rabbit mean?

Follow the white rabbit comes from Alice in Wonderland and was made famous by The Matrix: it means following a clue into something bigger than you expected. On the COFENEO website, small white rabbits hide in each chapter, and each one reveals a letter of a hidden word.

Is COFENEO affiliated with The Matrix or Warner Bros.?

No. COFENEO is an independent brand concept inspired by the themes of The Matrix. It is not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by Warner Bros. or the film's creators, and the website uses no footage from the film.

Which coffees does COFENEO feature?

Two specialty coffees from northern Thailand. Choice [0], red: a 250 g espresso roast from the village of Doi Chaang, with notes of lime, rum, tropical fruit, papaya and coconut. Choice [1], blue: a 250 g espresso blend from the village of Akha Ama, with notes of banana, cocoa flowers, tonka and vanilla.

How do you build a coffee brand concept?

Start with one idea you can say in a sentence, then let it decide everything else: the name, the identity, the packaging, the copy and the website. Test every element against the idea and remove what does not serve it. That is how Alkeme Design built COFENEO, and how the studio approaches coffee brands for clients.

What makes good coffee packaging design?

Good coffee packaging protects the beans, tells the origin and roast clearly, and carries the brand idea in its shape or color, not only in the logo. COFENEO's pouch is shaped like a pill and sealed flat around the edge, so the package itself says red pill or blue pill before anyone reads a word.
